(SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer today released the results of the latest slot machine census conducted last month by agents with the California Department of Justice's Division of Gambling Control (DGC).
The survey of the state's 61 compacted Indian Gaming tribes shows there are 40,883 slot machines currently in operation in 46 tribal casinos as of November 30. (See attached list.)In September 1999, Governor Gray Davis signed gaming compacts with the original 59 separate Indian Nations authorizing specified forms of gambling, including the use of slot machines. At that time, there were 18,536 slot machines operating in 37 tribal casinos. Before the compacts went into effect on May 15, 2000, the tribes had a total of 19,137 slot machines in operation at their casinos. During the last census, conducted in January 2001, DGC agents determined there were 25,196 slot machines in operation at 40 gaming facilities operated by compacted tribes.
During the summer of 2000, the tribes conducted a 'draw' for the rights to additional slot machines which, consistent with the terms of the compact, were expected to result in a modest increase in the total number of machines in operation in California. The latest census shows the number of slot machines currently in use is less than the total number of slot machines authorized under the terms of the Tribal-State Gaming Compacts. The Governor has said the compact he signed authorizes a statewide limit of 45,206.
In its capacity as the State Gaming Agency pursuant to the compacts, the DGC is responsible for the investigation of the qualification of financial backers, vendors and key employees at tribal casinos within the geographical boundaries of the state. The DGC also is charged with ensuring compliance with the terms of the compacts in the regulation of Class III gaming by reporting its findings and making recommendations to the Gambling Control Commission.
