Attorney General Bonta: California’s Net Neutrality Law Is Here to Stay

OAKLAND – California Attorney General Rob Bonta today issued the following statement on a decision by associations representing major internet service providers to dismiss their lawsuit challenging California’s net neutrality law. Senate Bill 822 protects Californians from blocking, throttling, harmful forms of zero-rating, and other anti-competitive practices that harm consumers and undermine the public interest.

“My office has fought for years to ensure that internet service providers can't interfere with or limit what Californians do online,” said Attorney General Bonta. “Now the case is finally over. Following multiple defeats in court, internet service providers have abandoned this effort to block enforcement of California's net neutrality law. With this victory, we’ve secured a free and open internet for California's 40 million residents once and for all.”

Earlier this year, Attorney General Bonta secured a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit allowing California’s net neutrality law to remain in effect while litigation was ongoing.
