(SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer today issued the following statement in response to the jury's death sentence verdict in the Scott Peterson trial:

"I want to express my appreciation for the conscientious efforts of all the jurors in the Peterson trial. Their task was a solemn one that required dedication and faith in our justice system.

"In California, every defendant is entitled to a fair trial in front of a jury of his or her fellow citizens. I believe that Scott Peterson received a fair trial and a just sentence for his crimes."

The Attorney General's office is responsible for defending on appeal criminal convictions, including death penalty sentences, obtained at the trial court level. In addition to a mandatory appeal that must be made to the California Supreme Court, it is common for condemned inmates to file multiple appeals in both state and federal courts. The Attorney General's office will represent the State in defending any and all appeals filed in this case.
