California has the strongest consumer protection laws in the nation. But our laws are only as good as their enforcement — and as Attorney General, I’m making sure our laws are enforced. This week, we took action. We announced a judgment that is a big step forward for tenant rights —flipping a real estate investment company’s business model on its head. We held “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli’s company accountable for putting profits over people. We announced the sentencing of a group of individuals responsible for perpetrating a student loan assistance scam. And more!

Day in and day out, this work continues. Because protecting all Californians is my priority.

Protecting Tenants from Unlawful Eviction

Eviction Notice
Too many Californians live on the precipice of eviction, worried that they and their family might someday be kicked out of their home. While we have strong protections in place for tenants of this state, there are still those companies who would skirt the law to turn a profit. I announced this week that as a result of my department's work, a company that was alleged to have unlawfully evicted tenants will not only pay millions in restitution, but will flip its business model on its head, ensuring that tenants of its homes are afforded full protections under the law.

Holding “Pharma Bro” Company Accountable for Drug-Pricing Monopoly

Cash and RX drugs
This week my office secured a $40 million settlement against “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli’s Vyera Pharmaceuticals and its parent company Phoenixus for stifling competition to drastically raise the price of a drug used to treat the potentially fatal parasitic disease toxoplasmosis. When the defendants acquired the rights to the drug in 2015, they raised the price per tablet from $17.50 to $750 — an increase of more than 4000%. The selfish choices these defendants made put lives at risk, and they will be held accountable.

Protecting Student Loan Borrowers from Fraudsters

 A woman looking at bills
Too many Californians are already living paycheck to paycheck, wondering how they are going to pay off their student loans while also paying for rent, utilities, and other everyday expenses. The last thing they should have to worry about is predatory actors looking to turn a profit at their expense. Student Loan Relief Department's scam operation was deliberate and damaging, but thanks to the efforts of our team and our federal partners, those involved are being held accountable.
