OAKLAND – California Attorney General Rob Bonta today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement that it would extend the student loan payment moratorium to May 1, 2022:
“I applaud this move by the Biden Administration, which will be welcome news for the more than 42 million student borrowers nationwide who continue to grapple with the economic impacts of COVID-19,” said Attorney General Bonta. “Too many Californians are already living paycheck to paycheck, wondering how they are going to pay off their student loans while also paying for rent, utilities, and other everyday expenses. As a nation, we must fix the broken student loan system, but never has it been more urgent than during this pandemic. I urge the Education Department to maintain this moratorium until we have successfully weathered this storm. My office remains a steadfast partner as we work with our federal partners to address these crises together.”
