Messages of Condolence

SAN FRANCISCO - Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today issued the following statement on the death of San Bernardino Police Officer Bryce Hanes, who was killed this morning in the line of duty:

“On behalf of the entire California Department of Justice, I extend my sympathies to the family and loved ones of Officer Bryce Hanes. I also extend my condolences to Chief Jarrod Burguan and the entire San Bernardino Police Department, which has lost not only a colleague, but a family member. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers willingly and bravely assume each day when they put on the badge in service of their communities and their state.”

SACRAMENTO - Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz:

"On behalf of the entire California Department of Justice, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sheriff Gary Kuntz, as well as the entire Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department.  Sheriff Kuntz dedicated three decades of his life to serving and protecting his community, and his service, commitment, and memory will not be forgotten."

SAN FRANCISCO – Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Hayward Police Sergeant Scott Lunger, who was killed this morning in the line of duty:

“My heartfelt sympathies are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Scott Lunger, a brave member of the Hayward Police Department who gave his life this morning in the line of duty.  His service and his sacrifice will be forever remembered by the people of California. On behalf of the California Department of Justice, we offer our condolences to all those who served with Sergeant Lunger and our gratitude to all the men and women in law enforcement who face extraordinary risks and make tremendous sacrifices every day while serving and protecting our communities.”

SACRAMENTO – Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Bakersfield Police Officer David Nelson:

"Today, Bakersfield Police Officer David Nelson bravely gave his life in service of his community and the state of California. On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, his loved ones, and the entire Bakersfield Police Department. The state of California and our law enforcement family will be forever grateful for his dedicated service.” 

Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson:

"On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Officer Michael Johnson, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of his community and his state.  My condolences also go out to Chief Larry Esquivel and the entire San Jose Police Department, which has lost not only a dedicated colleague, but a family member. Yesterday’s tragedy is a grave reminder of the risks that our law enforcement officers take each day when they put on the badge to protect their communities. The state of California and her people shall forever be indebted to these brave men and women for their service."

Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond:

"Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond bravely gave his life in the line of duty, and we are enormously grateful for his courage and sacrifice. On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at the Pomona Police Department. Officer Diamond’s memory will live on every day in the work of all of California’s law enforcement officers."

Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko: 

“Today, the state of California lost another dedicated law enforcement officer in a senseless tragedy. My sympathies go out to Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko’s family and loved ones, as well to as the members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Kostiuchenko’s sacrifice and service will never be forgotten by the people of California.”

Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer County Sheriff’s Office Detective Michael Davis Jr.:

"On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Deputy Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis Jr. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and Placer County Sheriff’s Department have lost two courageous and dedicated colleagues, and we will never forget Deputy Oliver and Detective Davis' service and sacrifice. Today's tragic events remind us that California's law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect us."‎

LOS ANGELES -- Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the death of Covina Police Department Officer Jordan Corder:

"Officer Jordan Corder's death is a tragic loss for the city of Covina and the state of California. On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Officer Corder's family, friends, and the men and women of the Covina Police Department. We will never forget his service and sacrifice."

Attorney General Harris today issued the following statement on the passing of James Brady:

“Today, our nation lost a true hero in James Brady. His tireless advocacy on behalf of reasonable gun safety laws has made our communities safer by keeping firearms out of the wrong hands. James’ bravery, determination and service to his country will live on through The Brady Act and the work of all those who continue the fight to reduce gun violence. 

I extend my most sincere condolences to his family, friends and all of his loved ones.”
