In my book, there are two words that can’t be said enough: “thank you.”

As we enter the holiday season and sit down for our Thanksgiving meals next week, I’m feeling grateful. Grateful for our essential workers, first responders, service members, public servants, and all who serve and give back to our communities.

At the California Department of Justice, we show our gratitude through action. This week, we thanked our essential workers by securing a first-of-its-kind judgment requiring Amazon to end harmful labor practices, a huge win for tens of thousands of warehouse workers. We expressed our thanks for Dreamers — those brought to America as children, including an estimated 27,000 who are now healthcare workers — by leading a multistate coalition in support of the federal government’s efforts to fortify the DACA program. We showed our gratitude for our kids by announcing an investigation into Instagram’s impact on their mental health.

Expressing gratitude shouldn’t be reserved for Thanksgiving and the holidays. It’s an action worth taking every day. Thank you, California.

Warmly,

Rob

Upholding COVID-19 Protections for Workers

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our nation’s essential workers. As we continue to battle the pandemic, businesses must do their part to protect workers now — and especially during this holiday season. AB 685, authored by Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gómez Reyes, requires employers to notify workers of potential workplace exposures and to report outbreaks to local health agencies. This week, my office secured a first-of-its-kind stipulated judgment requiring Amazon to end harmful labor practices that concealed COVID-19 case numbers from workers and to provide key information on existing workplace protections. Californians have a right to know about potential exposures and protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

Safeguarding Kids from Mental Health Dangers of Social Media

For too long, Meta — formerly known as Facebook — ignored the havoc that its platform, Instagram, has wreaked on our children. Meta’s own research shows that using Instagram is associated with increased risks of physical and mental health harms on young people, including depression, eating disorders, and even suicide. Enough is enough. This week I announced a multistate, bipartisan investigation to get answers about Meta’s efforts to promote the use of Instagram to young Californians – and to determine if, in doing so, Meta violated the law.

Protecting our Nation’s Dreamers

DACA Advocates in front of Supreme Court
For hundreds of thousands of Dreamers across the country, home is here. They continue to show up for our communities and we’re going to keep showing up for them. This week I co-led a coalition of attorneys general from across the nation to support federal efforts to fortify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. From defending DACA in court to supporting new federal efforts to fortify it, California will continue to lead the way in standing up for our nation’s Dreamers.

Standing Together to Protect Students from Hate and Discrimination

This week, I stood behind the students and faculty in Chino who used their voices to fight a proposal by two Chino Valley Unified School District board members that would have discriminated against students on the basis of gender identity. I applaud and thank these students for their collective action, and as the People’s Attorney, I will continue to stand with those who fight hate and discrimination in all forms.
