Does the foreclosure consultant I’m thinking of doing business with have a Certificate of Registration from the Attorney General’s Office? Does it matter?

Yes, it matters! You should not do business with a foreclosure consultant who does not have a Certificate of Registration because this person should not be doing business as a foreclosure consultant at all.

Am I safe doing business with any foreclosure consultant who has a Certificate of Registration?

Unfortunately, no. Before you do business with any foreclosure consultant, make sure you understand exactly what they are going to do to help you. Be sure to read the contract before you sign it and make sure everything they tell you is in the contract. Be sure all your questions are answered to your satisfaction.

Do not pay any money up front (it’s illegal for any foreclosure consultant to take money before the work that was agreed upon is complete). Ask for references and check them out. Finally, contact HUD counselors first, to see if they can help you - - it might be free.
