Born in Bethlehem, NY on November 19, 1817. First served as Illinois State Attorney General, 1843-1846. Elected California Attorney General October 7, 1850, but resigned December 30,1851. Later served as Representative in Congress and United States Senator from California, where he served as one of California’s premier railway advocates. Died in Albany, NY in 1867 at the age of 50.
