California Attorney General Rob Bonta is committed to working with California Native American tribal governments towards collaborative solutions that ensures mutual respect of each entities shared responsibilities and sovereign interests. To achieve this goal, and to allow for a more formal process of engagement, Attorney General Bonta is creating a first-of-its-kind Tribal Consultation Policy for the Office of the Attorney General, California Department of Justice.
Attorney General Bonta wants to hear directly from California Native American tribal leaders on matters that promote the health, safety, and welfare for their tribal citizens. As the state’s top lawyer and law enforcement official, Attorney General Bonta protects and serves the people and interests of California through a broad range of duties.
The Attorney General has directed his Office of Native American Affairs (ONAA) and the Native American Tribal Affairs Section (NATA) to coordinate and collaborate directly with California Native American Tribal Leaders in the development of a tribal consultation policy. To accomplish this in the most efficient and expeditious manner, seven (7) Engagement (Listening) Sessions with California Native American tribal governments were conducted. Comments regarding the development of the tribal consultation policy may be emailed to ONAA@doj.ca.gov, or mailed to the Office of Native American Affairs, California Attorney General’s Office, P.O. Box 944255, Sacramento, CA 94244-2550.
